3 Secret Steps to Starting Your Soul’s Work

Dear Spiritual Seeker,

You have a lot to offer!

You want to share your gifts with the world. You want to contribute, make a difference, be of service.

You know you can create the life of your dreams, you’re just not exactly sure how sometimes.

You feel stuck.

You procrastinate. You resist. You know you should write, but instead you’re on Facebook. You want to dance, but you’re folding laundry.

I know how you feel because I too wrestle with resistance.

When I quit my career after ten years, I did so to write. I was going to take on my life’s dream, sit down, write a book, publish it and be famous. I was the next Judy Blume, or perhaps, J.K. Rowling.

Then, reality set in.

I had demons to face and a fire-breathing dragon to slay.

So, I bought a new computer to use only for writing. I bought a new desk that was beautiful and provided lots of space. I made a beautiful writing room, bought plants here, and stocked it with my favorite books.

Again, I couldn’t get myself to actually sit at the computer. I felt uncomfortable, agitated. 

I researched how much Ms. Rowling made from Harry Potter. A cool Six hundred million or some such nonsense. 

I imagined my life after I had that much money.

Still, no writing. 

I inched through days and weeks like so, until I finally gained some consciousness around what was going on.

This was fear. This was my ego.

The ego always want to go the predictable route. It feels safe that way.

To take on a new endeavor or a new level of creativity is to go into uncharted territory.

This is literally death to the ego. The ego can’t predict what’s down that road, it feels like annihilation.

To our instinctual, ego-driven self, we are facing the fear of ceasing to exist.

This is BIG.

So, we just have to make the choice to DO IT ANYWAY.

As Steven Pressfield says in his book, The War of Art, “You have to put your ass where your heart is.”

I was watching him recently on Super Soul Sunday with Oprah. I recognized what he was saying, instantly. I have walked that road and uncovered that truth for myself.

This first step for many creatives is a daunting one. Actually getting our body where our beliefs are, as Julia Butterfly Hill put it, takes something.

The problem is that it takes facing that dragon, overcoming our ego, having integrity and it takes Self Love.

That sounds trite, but it’s true. We have to be willing to love ourselves enough to first admit and own what we really want.Then we have to be willing to make the choice to give it to ourselves.

This can be difficult if we are living out other’s wishes for our lives, or we don’t know what we really want.

Here are the three secret steps to starting our soul’s work:

SECRET #1: KNOW THYSELF:

So many of us are so distracted, or seeking stimulation from the outside world, that we don’t even know what we want, or we do know what we want, but we’re wasting time doing other things.

We have to connect to ourselves and claim our deepest desires.

We have to recognize our guidance and when it’s prompting us to take action.

 SECRET #2: PUT YOUR ASS WHERE YOUR HEART IS: 

Once you’ve owned what you want, you have to love yourself enough to go after it, over-come your insecurity and actually do it. This is the path of the mystic, the purpose of the soul, and this is what growth is all about.

SECRET #3: GO PRO:

Just do it. This means you take on your life’s work full-time. You commit.  You have to share yourself with the world and this requires a full-time commitment.

If you were not allowed to creatively explore or express yourself when you were young, then you are literally re-wiring your nervous system as you allow yourself to express your creativity.

You are essentially reclaiming lost soul parts, and giving rise to their voice through your painting, your words, or your song.

This is shamanic in nature, it is the re-parenting of ourselves, the reclamation of lost parts, the sewing together of the tapestry of our soul into a complete expression of our Divinity. 

This is the ultimate purpose of our lives.

We are here to grow our soul, live our art, express ourselves, share our gifts. We crave it so deeply, we want nothing more. It’s our purpose, it is a required course. 

When we turn to face that fire-breathing dragon, what we find is a match on the floor.

It’s not as big of a deal as we thought. It is more painful to resist than to actually do it. 

Perhaps Joseph Campbell said it best, “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure that you seek.”

Entering our fear is how we start our soul’s work.

Then, we get to know ourselves deeply, experience the magic of making a difference and we receive recognition from the universe.

We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
